I have used many different email addresses in my 10+ years on the Internets. I started with a email address from Brooklyn College, moved on to Hotmail and then several custom domains. I would ping-pong between different corporate emails and amusingly geeky personal ones. But being an Admin by profession I have kept all my craptastic forwards geektacular jokes “Historical Emails”.
I have folders with email messages dating back to 1996. Now I try and stay neat and productive, creating necessary folders for projects or contacts. Archiving when I no longer need instant access to outdated material. But that just doesn’t happen when I am putting out fires around the virtual office all day. And the end result is a inbox full of CRAP! Looking through some of my older emails I found loads of duplicates and for some reason that REALLY annoyed me.
I went looking for a FREE Outlook Duplicate Remover. Easier said then done. All the ones I downloaded were crap-ware. Pure Trial Crap. Trial software is like what Crack is to the drug market. Give them a taste for free, let them see what we can do and then get them hooked. After you are hooked yank it away and ask for money.
But as always I did find what i was looking for - for free. It’s called Vaita’s free Outlook Duplicate Items Remover.

Guess what it does?
Wow, you MakeUseOf readers sure are smart! It removes duplicate items from Outlook! I tried it on Outlook 2003 and it says it works with all versions of Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003 or 2007. I do not see that it works with Outlook Express.
Let’s check it out and I will show you how easy it is to use! After downloading and installing the small 2.11MB File you will be prompted to shut down Outlook to complete your installation.
Upon restarting Outlook you will have a new menu item as you can see below:

Once you click on the ODIR menu Or Hit Alt-O you will be greeted with it’s menu allowing you to simply select what folder you want to run ODIR against. You can do sub-folders but not all the way at the Personal Folder level. Meaning you might have to run this several times against several different folders.

In the instance above I selected a folder in by inbox labeled Sonicwall Alerts. All I do is hit the Remove Duplicate Items button and let the app do it’s magic.

Depending on the amount of messages or items in that particular folder is how long it will take. A folder with a hundred messages will take 30 seconds on a fast machine and a few thousand emails will take a few minutes. Once it finds the messages it creates a sub folder called ODIR_Duplicated_Items and moves the dupes there.

You can then decide if you want to /kill the folder or just individual items. As you and ODIR build a better relationship and you come to trust her… You can just have the folder disappear automagically.
I hear you muttering why did I say items and not messages in that last paragraph… That’s because this will work on Contacts, To-Do Items and Calendar entries! How sweet is that? Undo the damage you did syncing your new device! Are you curious as to how ODIR Works it’s magic? Check out this:

Do you have a similar tool you use? How do you handle Outlook dupes?

Even though I’m not much of a photo person, I do manage my photos. Mostly just collecting-grouping-tagging-retouching (using iPhoto), and resizing (using now not free anymore ImageWell) to be able to easily send to my friend or use the image for my blog.
I also have a Flickr account but there was only 3 photos inside it. The reason: I personally thought that online photo management process was too troublesome for the happy-go-lucky-shoot-everything amateur photographer like me.
Then comes JetPhoto Studio, an all-in-one photo tool (available for Mac and Windows). This application is a bit unknown because developed by Chinese programmer. But unknown doesn’t mean bad because this app has tons of good features.

What’s Inside The JetPhoto?
Beside the standard image management tools such as making photo album, editing (automatic enhancing, black and white color effect, sepia color effect), resizing images in batches, archiving and backing up photos, importing (from camera, webcam, scanner, and other storage location); JetPhoto Studio enables user to organize photos by notes, keyword tags, camera status tags, time and geographical location. It also let user manage their photos by dates - which to many people is easier.

JetPhoto Studio has geo-tagging capabilities with smooth integration with Google Earth and Google Map. I don’t go around much so I don’t use this feature, but for those of you who are phototraveller, this one is a treat.
Another features most users will appreciate are the ability to create photo gallery - JetPhoto can easily make beatiful flash slideshows as well as lightbox web galleries, screensavers and desktop wallpaper, photo slideshow for presentation, and small images by resizing and cropping photo to fit most handphones and PDAs. Printing photo is also a snap either using your own printer or JetPhoto online printing service.

JetPhoto Studio works very well with the web. Uploading and resizing pictures for Flickr is a matter of clicking a button. Tags and Descriptions will be uploaded with photos, too.
For the adventurous ones, this application also comes with JetPhoto Server - a full-featured digital photo publishing service software based on PHP. With JetPhoto Server, anyone can establish his or her own standalone theme photo website quickly and freely.
To publish album to your web server, you can use WebSync. All uploaded pictures will be resized and stamped with watermark automatically while publishing. Once the album is published on web server, user can continually modify its content easily in JetPhoto Studio. The web-side online album will be updated and synchronized with the local album automatically, as long as WebSync is acted again.
Meanwhile, to manage your photo website, you can also use Website Manager, another module especially provided by JetPhoto Studio. For example, to set web page appearance for each online album, or to set an access password for the website.
This article is nothing but a quick look skin-deep chat about the app. If you want a more extensive elaboration, please refer to their online manual.
I personally find JetPhoto Studio to be very helpful, and my Flickr free account is already showing the limitation nags. What’s your personal favorite for all-in-one photo management tool? Spill everything in the comments below.

Airtel iPhoneIn an interview given to Indiatimes,
Airtel's IT director Jai Menon claimed that the Airtel version of the
iPhone 3G is hacker-proof and even the most talented hackers on the
planet won’t be able to crack the iPhone’s Airtel applications with other SIMs.
Airtel claimed that even if a hacker manages to get another provider's SIM card to work with on Airtel iPhone 3G, they would still be locked out of Airtel-specific applications like Airtel Live and mCheck,
With no access to Airtel Live they wont be able to access any text,
audio, video, static images, music or gaming options available on the
preloaded Airtel Live portal.
It's very surprising to see Airtel locking their iPhone's even when
Indian customers are paying Rs. 31,000/- (~ US$715) and a fully working
unlocked iPhone (non 3G for now) from grey market is easily available
under Rs. 24000/-, being a Airtel customer myself, I would suggest
Airtel and their tech team to invest more efforts in improving the
quality of their service instead of making such non-worthy statements
as nobody is going to put efforts in cracking this pricey iPhone just
for using Airtel Live.
BTW, I guess it should be pretty easy to flash the Airtel iPhone OS with original iPhone firmware and get rid of Airtel crap from it. read more »

Microsoft expects Vienna to be completed by 2010, the most talked about
feature of this future OS is MinWin - a minimalistic variation of the
Windows 7 kernel. On October 13, 2007, Eric Traut gave a presentation
in which he demonstrated MinWin, running a basic HTTP server. The demo
system presented was an OS image made up of 100 files and made up a
total of 25 MB on disk and a working set of 40 MB. It lacked a
graphical UI and was interfaced using a text console UI.

Process Lasso is an advanced task manager
with ability to keep tab on resource hoggers resulting in system
lockups and crashes, this small utility sits in your system tray and
kicks in when certain user defined conditions are met like an
application eating up more than 60% of your CPU cycles, Process Lasso
will then avoid system lockup or crash by dynamically lowering process
priority of the particular process.

Process Lasso
Author Description:
Process Lasso is a unique new technology intended to
automatically adjust the allocation of CPU cycles so that system
responsiveness is improved in high-load situations. It does this by
dynamically temporarily lowering the priorities of processes that are
consuming too many CPU cycles, there-by giving other processes a chance
to run if they are in need. This is useful for both single and
multi-core processors. No longer will a single process be able to bring
your system to a virtual stall.

Process Lasso Download
In addition, Process Lasso offers capabilities such as default
process priorities, default process CPU affinities, termination of
disallowed processes, and logging of processes executed. With Process
Lasso you essentially create rules to manage processes running on your
system. For example:
1. Examples Make notepad.exe run at below normal priority each time its launched.
2. Make firefox.exe run only on CPU #1 each time its launched.
3. When any process is consuming 35% or greater of the CPU for 1.5
seconds or more and the total system CPU usage is 95% or greater, lower
that process's priority until it returns to 5% CPU utilization.

Download Autopatcher XP
Here is what is posted by the Autopatcher Team:
Today we received an e-mail from Microsoft, requesting
the immediate take-down of the download page, which of course means
that AutoPatcher is probably history. As much as we disagree, we can do
very little, and although the download page is merely a collection of
mirrors, we took the download page down.
We would like to thank you for your support. For the past 4 years,
it has been a blast. Unfortunately, it seems like it's the end of
AutoPatcher as we know it.
Comments are welcome...
Antonis Kaladis
If you have no idea what is (was) Autopatcher, here is a official description:

How many times did you have to leave your computer, after a format,
to download the updates you had before it? How many times did you have
to go do something else, leaving your friend's computer download the
load of updates with their poor little dial-up modem? How many times
have you wished for the updates to be portable from one computer to
another and not require but a few mouse clicks to install?
If you're the "computer guy" of the pack, no doubt the answer to the
above questions was "I've lost count"! And if you have one or two
computers you should consider yourself lucky as well. Think of what
would happen if you had to update ten or twenty computers daily!
Is there any way to avoid all this trouble?
Besides the updates one finds on Windows Update (which are not
portable), Microsoft also issues special updates (called administrative
updates or network install updates), which do not require an Internet
connection present during the installation process. The user however
will have to answer to a series of (for the most part identical)
questions. Even this can be an annoyance since it requires the user's
presence for quite some time.
The solution!
AutoPatcher is based on the functionality of these special updates,
automating their installation process. This way, with only a few mouse
clicks and two minutes of your time, AutoPatcher is able to continue
with the installation of the items you selected. In short, AutoPatcher
combines the advantage of both Windows Update (presentation and
description of updates and automated installation), and the special
administrative updates (portability and installation without the need
of an Internet connection).

windows-vista-explorerWindows
Explorer in Vista makes it very easy for you to manage large folders
that have hundreds of files and sub-folders (e.g. Program Files or the
Windows installation folder).
Earlier, if you were to hunt for files that end with a .log
extension or are larger than 2 MB, Windows search was the only option
but things get much simple in Vista Explorer.

Just navigate to the relevant folder in Windows Explorer, click the drop-down next to the name tab and choose "Stack by Name".
windows-explorer
This will immediately group the files by name and it will become relatively easy for you to reach the relevant files.
You can apply similar search filters to group files by size or by file type (extension).

Internally, this is also using the built-in desktop search of
Windows Vista but the implement is more user-friendly and very
efficient. read more »
