Serial blasts in Guwahati, 5 Killed 30 injured
Three bomb explosions rocked the city of Guwahati on Thursday killing atleast five persons and injuring over 30. The Assam Police suspects the banned United Liberation Front of Asom behind the blasts.
Three powerful explosions went off at Birubari, Bhunath and Bhangagarh areas in the city.
The first blast took place at 1515 hrs at Birubari, followed by the next one at in Bhutnat at 1745 hrs and the final one at Bhangagarh at 1800 hrs.
The bomb at Birubari was planted in a Guwahati Municipal Corporation dustbin while two others bombs were planted in market places.
Two of the killed were identified as persons identified as 17-year-old Amal Das and Kahil Seikh, while at least 25 persons were admitted to various hospitals.
There were four ladies among those admitted in Guwahati Medical College Hospital. Those injured in Birubari blast were identified as Altaf Ali, Fatema Begum and Raul Ali, the sources said.
At least 13 persons were injured in the blast at a market in Bhutan area in the city. The blasts took place just a few hours before Union Home Minister P Chidambaram is scheduled to arrive in the city today to review the security scenario in the state.

Three blasts rocked Guwahati in crowded areas on Thursday, including one shortly before the arrival of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram.
The Assam Chief Minister’s Office confirmed that the blasts have left five persons dead and 51 others injured. According to initial reports, the bombs were of low intensity.
Speaking to CNN-IBN minutes after the third blast, Assam DGP, GM Srivastava said, “One person is in critical condition. We can confirm that the perpetrators are ULFA.”
The first bomb exploded in the Birubari area, injuring three persons.
At least four people were injured when a suspected cycle bomb exploded at Bhootnath locality, which falls on the route Chidambaram was to take, shortly before his arrival.
Three persons were injured in a blast outside a Big Bazar retail chain outlet at Bhangagarh, an upmarket commercial area near the Guwahati Medical College.
Earlier, an Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) kept in a municipal corporation dustbin went off at around 1530 hours IST leaving three persons wounded.
The injured have been rushed to a hospital and they were identified as Altaf Ali, Fatema Begum and Raul Ali, news agency PTI said.
Police have cordoned off the blast sites.
The state witnessed serial blasts on October 30, killing 88 people.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to arrive in Guwahati on Friday before leaving for Shillong on January 3 to inaugurate the Indian Science Congress.

The dustbin was kept near A TB hospital. Police rushed to the area and investigations were on.
A police spokesman said that none of Assam’s multiple ethnic or tribal militant groups had immediately accepted responsibility for the blasts.
In the past two decades, more than 10,000 people have lost their lives to terrorism in Assam, which is known for its tea, timber and oil reserves.

Three people were killed and 35 injured, including four women, when a bomb planted in front of a closed sweet shop exploded near upmarket Bhangagarh flyover on the busy Guwahati-Shillong road at around 5:45 pm.
Two persons died on way to hospital while another succumbed to his injuries at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital, DGP G M Srivastava said.
Two of the dead were identified as Amal Das and Kahil Sheikh.
A bomb kept in a bicycle exploded at a market in the Bhootnath area, the route which Chidambaram was to take on his way from the airport, under Baralumukh police station around 5.30 pm in which two persons were killed and 12 others injured, official sources said.
An Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) kept in a Gauhati Municipal Corporation (GMC) dustbin went off at around 3.30 pm injuring three persons in Birubari Tiniali area.
The blasts came a day ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s arrival here tomorrow enroute Shillong to inaugurate the Indian Science Congress there on January three.
Chidmabaram arrived at the Lokopriyo Gopinath Bordoloi international airport on a two-day visit to the state to review Assam’s law and order situation and attend a meeting of the Unified Command headed by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. PTI
